With his rock star swag, electric guitar and mic in hand, Lenny Kravitz rocked out at Oakland, California’s historic Fox Theater on Valentine’s Day during the U.S. leg of his 2012 Black and White America World Tour.
The sold-out show opened with an entertaining and energy-filled performance by the legendary neo-soul artist Raphael Saadiq. The Oakland native was excited to be “back home” and set the tone for Kravitz, who walked on stage wearing skinny jeans, boots, dark aviator sunglasses and a sleeveless shirt exposing his tattooed arms.
The energetic two-hour show captivated fans as Kravitz sang through his catalog of songs spanning the 20+ years of his career, making the 3,000+ concert-goers feel as if they were in an intimate theater. After singing his recent-hit, Black and White America, which is about his experiences growing up bi-racial, Kravitz proclaimed, “That’s my story and I’m sticking with it.”
Throughout the night Kravitz performed a mix of newer songs such as Push and Stand, with classic records like Are you Gonna Go My Way, American Woman, Fly Away and Stand by your Woman– which pleased die-hard fans. Kravitz playfully engaged and flirted with the audience. He and his long-time guitarist, Craig Ross, even did an acoustic rendition of I Belong to You which was perfect for Valentine’s Day lovers. To make fans feel more appreciated, he performed a 20 minute encore, singing the hit Let Love Rule from his 1989 debut album of the same name. Kravitz even surprised concert-goers during the song by jumping off the stage into the crowd, letting fans get close to him and then running to each level of the venue thereafter to do the same. Once Kravitz was able to free himself, he jumped back on stage to close the show—never skipping a beat or singing a note off-key.
New and old fans alike were amazed at Kravitz’s enthusiasm and sheer love for Oakland, his band and most important, his music. Lenny Kravitz is the ULTIMATE rock star.
