American Airlines and BlackAtlas.com’s Private Party at Red Rooster
You know you’re at a very special event when you look up and realize you’re sitting next to Cicely Tyson. Yes, THE Cicely Tyson. Such was the case for me at the private party for BlackAtlas.com held at Red Rooster this week. If you haven’t heard of Red Rooster Harlem yet, you certainly will soon. Occupying the ground floor and basement of a roomy location on Lenox Ave. between 125th and 126th, and very close to iconic Harlem staples like The Lenox Lounge and Sylvia’s, Red Rooster is poised to bring an entirely new level of downtown dining uptown. The Rooster is the brainchild of Ethiopian-born, celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson who promises “elevated American comfort food” at his newest hot spot. If the hors’d’oeuvres passed around the loft-like basement lounge were any indication, you’re in for a treat. The miniature tuna tartare tacos with avocado puree were so good I started stalking the wait staff. And the cucumber slices topped with a dollop of minced beets were an unexpected but tasty combo. I didn’t get a chance to ask Grammy nominated singer Chrisette Michele what her favorite dish was before she took to the stage to entertain, but I’m guessing she was just as impressed as I was.
